Welcome to the Centre for Science & Technology Education Research

 

Aim

The aim of the Centre is to enhance the learning and teaching of science, technology and environmental education and explore the use of ICT in these areas.

The Work

The Centre is known throughout New Zealand and internationally for its research and scholarship, and for the use of its research in the development of policy, practice, curriculum, resources, assessment and professional development.
 

History

The Centre for Science & Technology Education Research was formed in 1989. It has grown from the Science Education Research Unit, which was started in 1981 by Dr Roger Osborne and Professor Peter Freyberg. The Centre is an interdisciplinary centre jointly administered by the Faculty of Science & Engineering and Faculty of Education.

Study Awards

Each year a number of teacher study awards are offered that can be applied for by teachers who wish to enrol in either full or part-time study with the Center in the following year. Applications for these scholarships are considered each year in early December. Please contact the administrator to apply.
 

Courses

A variety is provided on-line, face-to-face, full-time and part-time postgraduate papers are offered and research supervision leading to a range of qualifications from postgraduate diplomas to Masters and PhD degrees. The academic programs offered are flexible and allow students to specialize in their particular area of interest, to undertake interdisciplinary study, and to learn to do research. Excellent facilities are available in the Centre and at the University so join the Centre community and take advantage of all that is offered. (see Degrees or Papers above)
 

Students

The Centre offers opportunities for professional growth for people working in science and technology education. Students include practicing teachers, teacher educators and curriculum developers from throughout New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and Asia. Most students are graduates seeking mid-career professional development through advanced study for higher qualifications. Staff and students work together as colleagues in a co-operative and supportive environment. (See Students)
